July Favorites
It's the start of a new month, which means it's time to share my favorites from the past month. Monthly favorite posts and videos are some of my favorite to read or watch, which is why they get their own page on my website :) I hope you like them them as much as I do!
Since Makeher reflects a creative lifestyle you'll see that this list cover many facets of life and include a variety of things that make me smile!
July 2015 Favorites:
Sweet Paul Magazine: I'm setting the bar high for this month's favorites by starting with this find. I discovered the Sweet Paul brand recently and was lucky that it coincided with the release of the summer issue of Sweet Paul Magazine- which comes out seasonally. The magazines are chock full of inspiration for creating, living, cooking, travel, you name it... There are really no words to describe how beautiful this publication is. Let's just say I am ordering back issues this week and will gladly move them to the new house in a few months. I HAVE to have them asap. While the magazine can be a little tricky to find, you can order in from there website. Or, if you're here in Baltimore, stop by Trohv to pick up your copy.
Imagine Dragons- Smoke and Mirror Super Deluxe: This is the album that I have been playing on repeat in my car for the past month. Such a great album! There are 20 songs on the Super Deluxe edition and every. single. one of them is fantastic. You'll recognize some of the songs from the radio, but they aren't even the best from the album. Happy listening!
Kat VonD Tattoo Eye Liner: Why, oh, why did it take me so long to try this eye liner?? I feel like everyone has known and been telling me how AMAZING this eye liner is for years. And guess what- they are right! Sharp, blacket black, completely smudge proof, smooth and easy to apply. Basically everything you want a liquid eye liner to be. I will never be without this again. Don't let the $19 stop you like it did me. It's worth it.
S'well Water Bottle: This purchase was a little unusual for me since I don't normally drink that much water, but decided to give it a try in hopes of changing that and after hearing rave reviews of these bottles. When the sales lady told me the large bottle "fits an entire bottle of wine" I knew she'd made the sale. The thing that makes the S'well bottle so unique is that is keep drinks cold for 12 hours and hot for 24. And while I've only had cold water in my bottle, I'd have to say that's true. It's so nice and refreshing to have cool water hours into my work day. I've found myself using this thing soooo much, and drinking so much water. In fact I've now cut soda out of my routine and now have it only as a "treat".
Ribbon Hair Elastics: This is another item I was slow to embrace. I really didn't know what was so special about it until recently when I learned that it doesn't leave a crease in your hair after being tied back using these magical things! That's huge for me. There is nothing worse than that darn crease that forces you to wash your hair every day if you've worn a pony tail the day before. I curse that crease.
Pilot V5 Pens: I love office supplies and I especially love a sharp tipped pen! This one is just great. I've already added the multi color pack to my Christmas wish list!
Martha Stewart Fringe Cutter: Love Love Love this tool! I got it on sales using a Michaels 40% off coupon and have loved it ever since. Making the tassels is easy peasy and I've used this tool for several projects already. Tassels are popping up all over the house and you'd be surprised at how many things you can embellish with fringe!
D.I.Y: Honeycomb Soap
As we enter August and the height of summer I wanted to share my most favorite summer project with you: Honeycomb Soap and Packaging!
I posted a YouTube tutorial on this project back in May, but wanted to share it with you here on Makeher, too. It's too cute not too!
There are two videos for this project- one for making the soap and one with packaging ideas and options. Both parts of the project are quick, easy and really fun!
I plan on making these jars of soap again for the holidays and gifting them to anyone who may like them. Because they work functionally as soap, and also look fabulous packaged up as a decoration they are perfect for a variety of recipients.
Please let me know if you make your own honeycomb soap- I'd love to hear about it :)
July Antique Finds
July was a great antiquing month for me this year- maybe the best month in years!
While our home decor in a mix between genuine antiques and new items that have an aged look, I'd have to say it leans more towards the antique side. I rely heavily upon antiques to make my house unique and filled with visual interest.
I'm excited to share with you the latest additions to my home decor stash! All of these items were found on a one-day on a trip to Pennsylvania I took with my mom. About half of these items went straight into a box labeled "NEW HOUSE" since we are moving next spring. Although I could find a home for all of these pieces in our current house I've opted to pack them away for an uber unboxing of treasures once we've moved!
Without further adew:
Mercury Glass Salt Celler. How sweet is this little guy?!?! I collect mercury glass, but I've never seen such a tiny piece. I am happy to add this to my collection and was thrilled with the price of $15 (reduced from a $16 price tag).
Metal Swan: I also collect swans/storks/crains in miniature. This guys sits on my curio shelves with his feathered friends. $4
Blue Demijohn: One of my latest obsessions are demijohns. I talked all about my love for them in a YouTube video when I found my first one- click here to watch! This month I scored the bottle at the left (with no stems) and love the pale aqua shade it brings my my collection. When I walked up to look at this bottle in the booth the tag read $17, which I thought was pretty good. Then the man said "$5". SOLD!
Black and White Wooden Thermometer: This beauty is already packed away for the move and I'm excited to pull it out next spring. What's not to love about this- black and white graphics, chipping paint, the metal cage, the thermometer is unbroken, ready to hang. This pieces is about 12" tall and will look great propped on a shelf, or hung on a wall! $35
Small Green Glass Float: The perfect treasure to display with the demijohns. I'd been wanting one of these for quite a while although I'd only ever seen large ones with large price tags to match ($80+). This miniature one is still encased with vintage twine and has beautiful bubbles throughout the green glass. A real score at $10 and I'm already displaying this in my house.
Flat backed Chandelier Crystals: The minute I saw these I was inspired to create! How could I possibly walk away from them? In fact, this is a repeat purchase! I intend on using these for some upcoming Christmas projects that I will start featuring in November. Stay tuned!
Chenille and Tinsel Christmas Tree: I was immediately drawn to this little tree and can't wait to pull it out for the holiday season. I've never seen a tree like this before and it's the perfect mix of fiber and sparkle for my style. We've purchased from this dealer several times and she gave me a deal at $25.
Crate Lid: It was the dreamy writing that sold me on this old crate lid. I have no idea what it says and I'm confused about why it's all in reverse- but love it non-the-less. This is going to make a great shelf pieces when I pull it out of the box next spring and you're definitely never going to see another one!. $15
Wood Hand Sign: This score was the highlight of the day. Made from layered wood and layers of plaster, then hand painted this is one of my favorite scores EVER. Once an advertisement/street sign piece, I found it hanging from the ceiling in an antique store and can only image it was still there, ON SALE (!), because no one was looking up! Thankfully! The attachments for hanging are still attached and I know exactly where it's going in the new house already. Approximately 3 feet long. Even my super cheap self couldn't walk away from this amazing deal at $106.
Black and White Letters: This is another piece I bought with the intentions of crafting. Hundreds of these double sided (different letter) cardboard letters will be perfect for making. Although they are looking fabulous now as I've stored them in an antique ball jar. We'll see where they end up. $10.
Thankfully not every trip is this successful or expensive! I was pretty much on a buying high from 8am- 3pm and crashed hard when I got home. Looking forward to another trip soon!
